Promising Co-Operation starts between Chemtrix B.V. and iX-factory GmbH in the Field of Micro Reactors

Dortmund (Germany), 11th March, 2009 - The MST-service provider iX-factory GmbH today announced the start of micro reactor production for the Dutch company Chemtrix B.V., as a co-operation partner.

The main idea which stands behind the technology of micro reactors is not new, with the registration of patents first realised in the 1930's, however over the last decades the efficiency of the technology has been improved based on the changing needs of customers and technological innovations.

The concept of micro reactor technology is both simple and easy to comprehend; two or more raw materials are introduced into the micro channel of a microfluidic glass reactor, in order to perform a specific chemical reaction. Owing to the small dimensions of the micro channels, the homogeneous nature of the reaction mixture results in rapid reaction and the increased control obtained makes the processes inherently safe, as reactions can be stopped on demand; overall providing a cost effective solution. As such the technology has found application in the chemical sector, which includes the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Utilising the chemically stable and highly cost efficient raw material, glass, allows the fabrication of micro reactors that exhibit wide ranging chemical application, analogous to that performed using conventional laboratory glassware. Additionally, iX-factory offers the possibility to integrate optical measurement techniques into the glass reactors. Due to the flexibility associated with this highly innovative technology, research and development is not the only area to profit MRT, with the production of parallel micro reactor units enabling the rapid transfer of results from the research laboratories to production processes. Along with the ability to improve chemical processes compared to batch, the technology also reduces development time enabling users to shorten production lead times and costs.

In the coming year, Chemtrix B.V. is planning to increase its production on an industrial scale by utilising the technology of micro reactors, with the main goal to produce sensitive chemicals and pharmaceuticals in higher quantities than currently possible. Specifically Chemtrix B.V. is planning to work with DSM Pharmaceutical Products, which is part of the Dutch Royal DSM.
